SLTC 2026 CONFERENCE 24TH-25TH APRIL – SAVE THE DATE
Abstract
A simple two-pit tanning process is described, suitable for the pro duction of commercial vegetable tanned belting leather. Laboratory and also pilot plant scale tannages have been conducted at both the prevailing British temperature and at a higher temperature likely to be encountered in warmer countries. Belting leather so produced easily satisfies the Indian Specification. The tannage described uses the tanning materials to the most economic advantage, the waste liquors from the process containing only about 05% tan, comparable to the tan content of waste liquors from the conventional counter current system. A comparison is made with the general commercial practice at pre sent prevailing in India. The suggested two pit tannage showing con siderable saving in labour, space and tannin units consumed.
