The advent of the drum chamoising process demands, and is more susceptible to, accurate control. Changes in the oil during tannage have been followed by Infra red Spectroscopy, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, and the Peroxide Value of the Oil. The latter appears to have most immediate use for works control, and relations are drawn between this and the observed phenomena of practical tanning.
