Apparatus similar to that described by Popplewell and Ward’ has been used to measure residual stress and linear set in specimens held extended for twenty-four hours, at room temperature, and contour maps show bow stress and set vary over the side. The results confirm that these properties have considerable random variation as well as the variation with location. The same is true for residual stresses and set after two-dimensional exten sion of specimens on a Lastometer. Fortunately, these local variations must be of smaller importance if shoe uppers are set by heat, as in modern shoe making.
