Softer resins in the base and pad coats and resins which are harder and more resistant to rubbing in the spray coat, give finishes with good break and better fastness properties. Larger differences in break are shown by finished than by unfinished leathers. Scuff resistance depends on the resilience of the leather, the dye penetration and to a less extent, the finish. The use of a base coat lowers scuff resistance, but addition of casein improves it. A new machine for measuring scuff resistance is described. These finishes are satisfactory at 200ºC.
