The Role of an Acid-Stable Fatliquor in Leather Manufacture

Abstract

Acid-stable fatliquors, based on highly unsaturated oils, that can find application at different stages of leather processing have been prepared. The influence of one such fatliquor based on sardine fish oil has been studied when applied during pickling and chrome tanning in comparison with a cationic fatliquor and control procedure wherein a conventional fatliquoring has been followed. The investigation has indicated that the introduction of an anionic acid-stable fatliquor during pickling and tanning results in the production of leathers with better feel and increased strength characteristics.
