Abstract
The feature which distinguishes H. R. Procter from his contemporaries, the Victorian scientists engaged in understanding the physics and chemistry of leather manufacture, is that for 20 years he was a practising tanner. The writer traces the history of the Richardson and Procter families and follows H. R. Procter’s education, training and achievements prior to his appointment in 1891, as the first Head of the Department of Leather Industries, Yorkshire College.
