Abstract

Pentachlorophenol was a standard fungicide used in the leather industry, legislation has now limited the permitted levels and substitute fungicides based on such products as 2-(Thiocyanomethylthio)-benzothiazole (TCMTB) have been introduced. This paper reports the synthesis of chloro methylthiocyanate (CMTC), which is used as an intermediate for synthesis of TCMTB. The compound is characterised by conventional methods, I.R., 1HNMR and mass spectral data.
