Current Status Of The Nigerian Leather Industry Part 1: Livestock Breeds And Diseases

Abstract

This paper examines the current status of the Nigerian leather industry. It reviews the livestock breeds of the country LLOfl which the production of raw hides and skins is based. The major diseases and defects affecting hides and skins in Nigeria are discussed. Also discussed in Part 2 are the potentials of hide and skin production in the country. Results of field surveys by the authors indicate that generally, not less than 964 of the hides and 35A of the skins go for human consumption. Overall, the surveys reveal that over 88% of the hides and skins produced in the country go for human consumption. The surveys further reveal that about 75% of the tanneries in Nigeria have at least temporarily closed down. Reasons for the poor state of affairs in the tanning industry are adduced and policy options suggested.
