Linear Relationship Between Collagen Degradation And Degree Of Swelling In The Beamhouse

Abstract

In the beamhouse collagen is degraded by the action of acids, salts and alkalis. In our study we found that the amount of degradation WaS decided not only by the kind and dosage of acids, alkalis and salts, but also by the degree of swelling. Collagen degradation increased in proportion to the degree of swelling, this Was found from the results of many experiments using different systems of acid, acid/salt, alkali, alkali/salt. The structure of collagen was degraded and impaired by the extent of the swelling. According to these results, non—swelling liming would cause less collagen loss than would the ordinary type of swelling liming.
