Preparation And Characterisation Of Synthetic Tannins Based On Phenol-Dimethylolurea Resin

Abstract

Phenolic syntans possessing methylene linkages between phenolic nuclei are susceptible to auto—oxidation producing coloured quinonoid compounds. In this respect, syntans having bridging groups like dimethylca— rbamide. sulphomethyl, sulphone. sulphonamide and propylene are known to exhibit better resistance to auto—oxidation. In the present investigation, studies have been carried out to syntliesise and characterise a svntan in which phenolic nuclei are linked together by a diniethyl carbamide group. Phenol was condensed with dimethylolurea and the resulting resin was subsequently sulphonated with concentrated sulphuric acid. Both phenol—dimethylolurea resin and its suiphonated product were characterised by chroniatographic and spectral methods. The syntan was prepared by muttLal neutralization of sulphonated and suiphomethylated phenol—diniethylolurea resin to a desired pH. The syntan was subjected to chemical analysis and assessed for light fastness characteristics.
