Current Status Of The Nigerian Leather Industry Part 2: Potential Hide And Skin Production

Abstract

Part I of this paper examined the current status of the Nigerian leather industry. It reviewed the livestock breeds of the country upon which the production of raw hides and skins is based.

Here we discuss the potentials of hide and skin production in the country. Results of field surveys by the authors indicate that generally, not less than 96% of the hides and 35% of the skins go for human consumption. Overall, the surveys reveal that over 88% of the hides and skins produced in the country go for human consumption. The surveys further reveal that about 75% of the tanneries in Nigeria have at least temporarily closed down. Reasons for this poor state of affairs in the tanning industry are adduced and policy options suggested.
