Status Of The Leather Industry In Eight African Countries Part 1: Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi And The Sudan

Abstract

This paper presents the data gathered from a UNIDO assisted study of the African leather Industry. Detailed statistics are given for hide and skin production and tannery capacities. In addition general descriptions are given of the breeds involved as well as the typical faults and problems with hides and skins. Proper exploitation of the natural resources of hides and skins to release the full potential of Africa would lead to its becoming a leading producer of leather and leather products. The paper is in two parts, the second will deal with Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
