A Simple Two Pit Sole Leather Tannage

Abstract

A simple two pit tannage for sole leather is described in which the only waste liquor for disposal contains approximately I % tan or less. The yield of tanned leather on limed pelt (for butts) is of the order of 65/70%, which may be increased by three days hot pitting to 75/77%. The resulting leather is of good colour and quality, including resistance to water penetration. Relatively lightly tanned leather suitable for the Indian and similar markets and more heavily tanned leather suitable for the U.K. and other markets has been made by the process. Chemical analysis and water resistance and uptake figures are given.
