Anomalies of Pigskin Structure Part II. Examination in a Scanning Electron Microscope

Abstract

The pigskin structure in its four typical topographic areas, i.e., neck, croupon, butt and belly, was examined under a scanning electron microscope. It was found that the most compact bundles of collagen fibres appear in the neighbourhood of looser and very loose structure. A degree of spatial weave compactness in pigskin, which is composed of locally situated various densities of fibre network, was related to a phenomenon of the occurrence of significant differences in results of basic strength tests for specimens cut out side by side from the same topographic part of skin.
