Changes in the Chromium Complex Composition of Masked Chrome Solutions During Tannage and Affinity of Various Chromium Complexes for Collagen

Abstract

Masked chromium solutions contain a great variety of different complexes which are able to combine selectively with collagen. The changes in the composition of such solutions has been investigated by ion-exchange chromatography. Amongst the formato- and acetatochromium complexes, complexes with charges corresponding to +2 and +3 had high affinity for collagen at high pH. Compared with the acetatochromium complexes, formatochromium complexes had considerably higher affinity. Oxalatochromium complexes corresponding to monooxalatochromium had affinities similar to that of the acetatochromium complexes. Anionic acetato- and oxalatochromate complexes had very low affinity.
