Tanning drums fitted with horizontal shelves and or stub pegs are now known to be poor mixers. Scaled experiments with Perspex model drums show that the mixing efficiency can be improved by replacing the traditional fittings with extra long flat-faced pegs (EL-pegs) angled preferably at 45° to the forward movement of the drum. For optimum effect the length of the EL-pegs requires to be at least 0.33 of the drum diameter. Data obtained from the experiments has been used to modify at low cost, large wooden drums in regular tannery use.
