Effect of Chrome Tanning on the Thermal Degradation of Hide Collagen
Abstract
Weight loss, solubility, and infrared spectral change of hide collagen on heating were obviously decreased by chrome tanning. It is suggested that chrome tanning increases dry heat resistance. Below 160°C, chrome contents in excess of 3% Cr₂O₃ (expressed on 100 parts of collagen) were effective in the prevention of thermal degradation of hide collagen.
