Abstract
An environmentally friendly biopolymer (CAA) used as a coating material for the preparation of hydrophobic paper has been developed by incorporating alkenyl succinic anhydride (ASA) into collagen hydrolysate (CH), the base paper was treated with CAA by a dip-coating technique to improve its water resistance. It was found that the acylated CHhas a significantly higher surface hydrophobicity than CHand that coating with CAA is beneficial to improve the hydrophobic property of paper. Experimental results indicated that the contact angle of water droplet on CAA-coated paper surface was about 125° and the C/O ratio of CAA-coated paper was increased to 3.76. XPS analysis and FESEM images of paper surfaces proved that CAAwas well retained on the surface as a hydrophobic layer. Moreover, the strength properties of CAA-coated paper were superior to those of uncoated paper.
