Goat Liveweight and Its Effect on Skin Area, Primary Follicle Density and Leather Grain Appearance
Abstract
Goats were slaughtered over the liveweight range from 3 kg to 28 kg, the skins tanned and the leather appraised. Grain appearance deteriorated with increases in liveweight and skin surface area and it was concluded that good grain appearance was associated with a high density of primary follicles producing relatively fine medullated fibres and having few coarse fibres.
