Abstract

Iron is an inexpensive and non-polluting material, with interesting tanning abilities.

In order to overcome the known drawbacks in the application of iron as a tanning agent, it may be complexed with other tanning metals.

This paper presents the structural characteristics of minimal tanning materials containing iron in various ratios and the results of their application in tanning bovine leather.

The manufacture of waterproof nappa and box leather having stable properties, without technological problems has provided useful experience regarding tannage with new environmentally friendly tanning materials.
