As the First World War raged, relations between the UK and German leather sectors became strained, to the point that in 1917 the UK broke away from the International Association of Leather Trades Chemists and founded its own separate Society. At the same time, the new Society created its own journal, the Journal of the Society of Leather Trades Chemists. Here, we examine that schism and reflect on the content of the new journal, which evolved into the modern Journal of the Society of Leather Technologists and Chemists.
