Observing Transparent Impregnants in Leather by a Direct Method
Abstract
A new and versatile method of observing transparent polymeric impregnants within the leather structure using light microscopy is described. The method involves matching the refractive indices of the leather fibres and mounting medium then observing by dark field, phase contrast or modulation contrast microscopy. Methods of optimising the viewing conditions are described and the usefulness of the procedure is demonstrated.
