Abstract
A multi-functional tanning agent has been synthesized by free radical co-polymerisation in water and the factors which affect the polymerisation are discussed. The conditions and properties of MTA used in leather tanning have been studied. The results show that MTA may be used in pretanning, retanning and filling. Thus the level of chrome tanning salts used may be made more economic and thus pollution due to chrome may be reduced. Leathers produced using MTA appear to be of high quality. The use of MTA does not affect the dyeing or fatliquoring of chromed leather.
