As an animal biomass resource, collagen not only has rich sources, but is also an important component of animal skins. In this study, structure and functional characteristics of collagen are summarized. The latest achievements on molecular assembly modifying methods for collagen crosslinking, groups, and graft copolymerization modifications are reviewed. The applications of modified collagen in the fields of leather, papermaking, cosmetics, biomedical material and food industry etc. are summarized. In addition, the prospect of its application in the leather industry is stated.
