Rapid Simple Chamois Tannages

Abstract

An investigation of chamois tannages has been carried out and processes have been developed that eliminate the need for stocking. In the Liri chamois processes, the oil is incorporated into hydro-extracted, aldehyde pre-tanned pelt in emulsion or dispersion form, with the emulsion being preferred. A suitable emulsion consists of 18 parts cod oil, 1 part oleic acid, 1 part triethanolamine, and 30 parts water. This is applied to the pre-tanned skins in a drum in three portions, with drumming continued only until the oil is evenly distributed and taken up by the skins. About 30% oil (75% emulsion) based on hydro-extracted weight is needed. The oil-impregnated skins are dried at relatively high temperatures and then hung with free air circulation to oxidize the oil. Excess oil is removed by scouring, after which the skins are dried, staked, buffed, and trimmed.
