The leather making process is aimed towards the conversion of raw hides into leather. This process generates much solid waste containing both hazardous and high value components. Therefore, the primary research hotspots are the elimination of the potential pollution and utilisation of the resource of leather solid waste. Herein, we comprehensively review recent advances in resource utilisation of leather solid waste from chrome tanning including the utilisation of tannery hair, untanned solid waste, chrome-containing leather waste, tannery sludge and finished leather waste, emphasising both general and novel utilisation approaches. Finally, the remaining challenges and perspectives were summarised, in order to accelerate the development of leather solid waste utilisation.
