Studies on Pesticides Used for the Protection of Skins During Storage and Transportation. Part 2: Analytical Studies and Environmental Impact

Abstract

In this report insecticides, which have been shown to protect dried skins from attack by Dermestes maculatus, and most of which are classed as safe for use in stored food grains by FAO, have been evaluated for persistence during tannery processing. In these trials key parameters are considered to be the quantity of insecticide remaining in the spent process liquors (including suspended solids) and the amount remaining in the pickled pelt. These results are summarised in tabular form below. The amounts of active insecticide on the skins when put into work were not constant and are not to be taken into account when comparing concentrations in the effluent.
