The Effect of Lamb Treatments on Whitespot Prevalence in Dyed Crust Leather

Abstract

A trial was done on lambs which tested the effect of six topical treatments (a diazinon solution, the excipient of this solution, a high-cis cypermethrin pouron, two disinfectants, and a zinc sulphate solution) and shearing on the prevalence and severity of the whitespot defect on dyed crust leather produced from the lamb skins. All the treatments except zinc sulphate apparently caused an increase in the prevalence of whitespot. Zinc sulphate had no significant effect. All the treatments except zinc sulphate and the excipient also appeared to increase the severity of the whitespot. The trials also demonstrated that the efficiency of whitespot detection in pickled pelts is low.
