The Influence of Quantity of Fatliquor Offered and Type of Finish on the Flex Resistance of Leather

Abstract

The leathers were fatliquored with sulphited sperm or sulphated sperm and raw sperm oil at levels between 1 and 5% oil as received based on shaved weight. The leathers were unfinished, casein finished, resin finished or nitrocellulose finished. The results indicate that the type of finish has a marked effect on break, particularly at lower fatliquor levels. For good flexibility of the leather and finish the higher level of fat is desirable and this is close to the maximum for good adhesion in the DMS process.
