The Study Of Some Leathers, Leather Finishes, And Leather Substitutes By Attenuated Total Reflectance Spectroscopy In The Infrared

Abstract

Spectra have been obtained by direct spectroscopy of films and/or by ATR of finishes containing acrylates, nitrocellulose, proteins, waxes, poly(vinyl chloride), polyurethanes, and mixtures or copolymers of acrylates, poly(vinylidene chloride), polyacrylonitrile, polybutadiene, and/or polystyrene. Few differences are revealed by examination of the ATR spectra of unfinished leathers of different tannages, but examination of some leather substitutes clearly shows up those based on poly(vinyl chloride) and gives much information about the components of laminar ones.
