The Use of Aluminium (Ill) to Improve Chrome Tannage
Abstract
The efficiency and effectiveness of chromium (III) tannage can be enhanced in a modification of the typical process by applying the normal or reduced chrome offer to collagen pre-treated at pH 4 with a small offer of basic masked aluminium (III) sulphate. The mechanism is rationalised by a thermodynamic model in which aluminium (III) has a catalytic function.
