Abstract
Seven different types of sole leather used to compare the Bally Permeometer and the SATRA flexing machine were tested o each machine, and other samples were used as detachable soles for the measurement of water penetration time and uptake at penetration during actual wear on a wet pavement. The two machines assess water penetration times equally well, and both assess uptake at penetration with less accuracy. The one advantage of the much more expensive Permeometer is that it can be used to measure rate of penetration of water through the leather—a measurement not normally attempted with the SATRA machine.
