Abstract
Three commercial grades of calcium carbonate and two commercial grades of magnesium oxide have been compared as basifying agents in chrome tannage. Either compound is a suitable reagent, but magnesia of reduced reactivity gives a smoother pH profile. Rates of reaction depend on the physical characteristics of the compound and grades must be selected for reaction rate with respect to the allowed tanning period.
